‘I’ve been written off many times’, says Bafana star

A Bafana Bafana star says many people had “written him off” many times in his football career, but has proven his doubters wrong at the just-ended CAF AFCON tournament.

This comes after Bafana Bafana’s successful journey at the AFCON competition held in Ivory Coast, as they surprised many with their great displays.

South Africa finished third at Africa’s prestigious showpiece after defeating DR Congo 6-5 on penalties following a 0-0 draw in regulation time during the third-place play-off clash this past Saturday.

The player in question is none other than Mamelodi Sundowns‘ Grant Kekana, who had a great time at the AFCON competition, coupled with some stellar displays.

Kekana played five games out of the seven matches played by South Africa in the competition.

GRANT KEKANA: ‘I HAD BEEN WRITTEN OFF’

The talented centre-back isn’t surprised by his achievements at the tournament despite being “written off” at some point in his career. But insists that he had to keep his eyes on the prize.

“For me personally, I think I have been written off quite a few times in my career, you know,” said Grant Kekana.

“I think I have been playing football professionally enough [like 13 years or so]. I have been written off many times, but it’s always about defying the odds. Also, working towards what you want, and also believing in what you can achieve.

“So, I think it goes down to hard work and always understanding that your purpose comes before anyone else’s opinion. So, we are just living out our purposes, giving our best, and the Lord has been good to us.”

Kekana continued: “He [Lord] has given us the platform to experience such a beautiful tournament and do well in it.

“For us, was just to grab it [opportunity] with both hands and appreciate the opportunity but also to make use of the opportunity. We are grateful for it, and hopefully, it doesn’t stop here.”
