Update on possible move for ex-Leicester City’s midfielder to CT City

Cape Town City FC chairman John Comitis has provided an update on the possible move of an ex-Leicester City midfielder to his club.

The Citizens are currently preparing for the highly-anticipated second round of the 2023/24 DStv Premiership campaign.

CT City has had a good start to the first half of the season and they occupy a second spot on the league table with 29 points. They won nine games in the league, drawing three while losing on five occasions after 16 games played.

CT City is nine points adrift of log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns who collected 38 points in 14 matches played.

Meanwhile, the Cape Town-based side also parted ways with Thato Mokeke and renewed contracts for Darren Keet and Taahir Goedeman.

With CT City still looking to bolster their squad, they have former Leicester City Midfielder Khanya Leshabela training with the club.

Comitis has waxed lyrical on Leshabela’s qualities and said they can’t wait to have the 24-year-old at the club.

“Khanya Leshabela is here training with us. Obviously he hasn’t been playing for a while and is not in good condition,” Comitis said on Radio 2000.

“But you don’t play for Leicester when you are not good enough and he did. We can’t wait to have him involved, he’s gone under the radar in South Africa.”

Leshabela played through different development ranks at Leicester City before gaining promotion to the first team.

He was sent out on loan to Shrewsbury in 2021/22 and Crewe Alexandra in 2022/23 before returning to City. His only EPL appearance for the Foxes was in 2021, making his debut against Sheffield United.

City will return to league action against Chippa United on Saturday, 17 February at Buffalo City Municipality Stadium. Kickoff is at 15:30.
