Bafana Bafana rise massively in latest FIFA rankings after AFCON success

Bafana Bafana have improved massively in the latest FIFA rankings after a successful AFCON tournament held in Ivory Coast.

South Africa finished third place in the just-ended CAF AFCON competition, coming back home with a bronze medal.

Hugo Broos‘ charges landed at O.R Tambo International Airport on Wednesday morning, with the side receiving a hero’s welcome from hundreds of fans.

Bafana have moved up eight places to 58th in the latest FIFA rankings. Before the AFCON tournament, Bafana were placed 66th in the world. As a result, South Africa are one of the top 10 African nations in the latest world rankings.

To add to that, South Africa are also placed 10th in Africa. This is the best CAF ranking the national team has occupied since January 2014.

OTHER AFRICAN NATIONS IN THE LATEST FIFA RANKINGS 

Africa’s leading nation in FIFA Rankings Morocco also moved to one step in the latest rankings from 13th to 12th place.

Meanwhile, Senegal, Nigeria, Egypt, Ivory Coast, Tunisia, Algeria, Mali, and Cameroon complete the line-up for Africa’s 10 best national teams in the latest rankings.

The World Champions Argentina remain top of the list followed by France who failed to defend their World Cup title against Lionel Messi’s nation.

England are number three followed by Belgium. Brazil and the Netherlands also remain in fifth and sixth place respectively at the latest world rankings. 

With Bafana having had a phenomenal journey at the AFCON tournament, they will be hoping to continue climbing up the rankings under the tutelage of the Belgian mentor, Hugo Broos.

To put a cherry on top, following the conclusion of the AFCON tournament, some of the Bafana stars including Teboho Mokoena, Ronwen Williams and Khuliso Mudua have been tipped to seal deals with European clubs after their impressive displays at this prestigious competition.
