My unforgettable flight with Bafana Bafana

The flight back was more than just a journey home; it was a glimpse into the soul of a team that had captured the hearts of a nation.

They may not have brought home gold, but their bronze shone brighter, symbolising their fighting spirit, unwavering determination and the unbreakable bond that carried them to glory.

This group’s third-place finish is a testament to their spirit and a promise of even more exciting victories to come. Jokes were shared, stories swapped, and the bronze medals, gleaming proudly around necks, served as a constant reminder of their shared achievement.

I had the chance to chat with some players, their faces still etched with battle fatigue but their eyes shining with pride.

They spoke of the challenges they faced during their seven weeks together – from Stellenbosch to Korhogo, San Pedro, Yamoussoukro, Bouake and Abidjan – the unwavering support from their families and the immense satisfaction of bringing home a medal for their nation.

Their stories were inspiring, indicating to hard work, dedication and unwavering belief in themselves and each other. But what truly struck me was the humility and sportsmanship they exuded.

Despite the successful AFCON, they remained grounded, acknowledging the contributions of their opponents and expressing their gratitude for the opportunity to represent South Africa on the world stage.

THE SOUNDTRACK OF THE FLIGHT

The rhythmic thrum of the engines was countered by a different beat, one born of joy and relief.

Veli Mothwa, his ever-infectious smile wide, pulsed the soundtrack of the flight – ‘Coupé décalé’ beats [a mix of Congolese rumba, hip-hop, Caribbean music and French folk songs] spilling from his Bluetooth speaker, his feet tapping a joyous counterpoint.

Party time on Bafana Bafana’s flight back to SA

We were aboard the victory flight, a 10-hour journey from Abidjan to Johannesburg. The camaraderie was just palpable. Orlando Pirates star Thabang Monare, a pillar of strength in the dressing room, stood animatedly, his voice rising in passionate discussion; the topic was churches exploiting the vulnerable in Johannesburg.

Just before we took off from the Félix Houphouët Boigny International Airport, Zakhele Lepasa dispensed wisdom to the young gun Jayden Adams, his words laced with belief in the 22-year-old’s European dreams.

Cameras flashed as Oswin Appollis, and Adams captured the moment with Lepasa and Nkosinathi Sibisi, their smiles mirroring the collective spirit. Even amidst the celebrations and quiet moments, which revealed deeper bonds.

Ronwen Williams, the composed captain, sat engrossed in conversation with media officer Romy Titus. When I winced, clutching my aching stomach, Ronza’s hand extended a can of Coca-Cola, a playful glint in his eyes, “You owe me a good story for this, remember?” Later, the plane reverberated with song. Bafana players, joined by ‘Mama Joy’, their number one fan, serenaded Themba Zwane, the shy talisman, his blushes an indication of his humility.

The spontaneous eruption of that ‘Themba Zwane ujika kamnandi’ chant was a heartfelt demonstration of their awe of his extraordinary talent.

JOKES FLOWED FREELY

Grant Kekana, ever the joker, playfully needled Nkosinathi Sibisi, their upcoming DStv Premiership clash casting a playful shadow. ‘Papa Tsitsi’ would randomly shout ‘Aw Bhodli’, short for ‘Bhodlela’, as Sibisi is affectionately known. Jokes flowed freely, Aubrey Modiba, the undisputed comedian, even as the team’s security chief, ever vigilant, ensured no celebratory beverages went ‘astray’.

‘Ta Mdu’, as everyone calls him, had his eyes scan his surroundings to ensure none of the players ordered ‘Joy Juice’.Laughter echoed as they teased video analyst Sinesipho Mali, his eyelids heavy with post-tournament slumber. “No analysis to do now, Mr Mali!” they teased, their camaraderie evident.

Throughout the flight, Jayden Adams’ furtive signals reached me, urging me to alert Oswin Appollis, who sat next to me, that he wanted to sign-speak to him. At the back, Terrence Mashego and Thapelo Maseko observed quietly, their reflective nature contrasting the vibrant energy around them.

Even the Kaizer Chiefs marketing director, Jessica Motaung, swept up in the euphoria, made her way down the aisle, offering the players her heartfelt compliments.

BAFANA BAFANA ARE A CLOSELY-KNIT FAMILY

As Coach Hugo Broos conceded with a knowing smile, this team was a family. Witnessing their interactions, the playful banter, the quiet support, and the shared joy of victory was undeniable. We landed at 5AM, greeted by a sea of red and white [EFF supporters] at OR Tambo airport.

Fans, waiting since 4AM, erupted in cheers, their voices a demonstration of the unifying power of this team. The players emerged onto the international arrivals exit, their medals held high.

The scenes of jubilation were a sight to behold, a testament to the unifying power of sport and the immense pride South Africa felt in its team.

And as the echoes of their victory song faded, Bafana set their sights on the next one – getting to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
