The chat Gavin Hunt had with Hugo Broos before 2023 AFCON

SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt has opened up about the chat he had with Bafana Bafana mentor Hugo Broos before the 2023 AFCON finals in Ivory Coast.

Seeking collaboration, Broos previously attempted to establish connections with PSL coaches who have regular familiarity with local players. Nevertheless, his efforts lacked a response.

Despite initial communication hurdles, Broos’ interactions with local coaches seem to be gradually improving. Notably, he engaged with TS Galaxy’s coaching staff and players last year.

With that said, Hunt has stated that Broos invited him to Bafana’s training session, and they had a long chat regarding the players in the team.

“I met him individually and I think he has been to a few clubs I don’t know what other clubs are,” said Hunt. “But for me, he’s like, ‘come to training’, so we did meet before the Nations Cup. He asked me my opinion about players, and I gave him my opinion. We did have a long chat.

“It was good, all the coaches that have been here from the first time, I think it’s very very important that the national team coaches have an interaction with the local coaches, it’s very important.

“If you look at it well, the protocols were right. They went through the PSL, and then obviously, I don’t know what happened from there.”

Hunt further revealed that he’s the one who got Bafana legend Benni McCarthy in the national team when Clive Barker was the head coach because of their work relationship.

“When I started coaching with Clive [Barker]. I mean, that’s how Benni [McCarthy] got in the team. I got Benni there, but let’s not go there,” he added.
