Ex-Sundowns captain weighs in on Mokoena’s rise at Masandawana

A former Mamelodi Sundowns captain has revealed what he makes of the Bafana Bafana international Teboho Mokoena’s progression since joining Masandawana.

Mokoena left SuperSport United to join cross-town rivals Sundowns for an undisclosed fee, having signed a three-year deal with the Chloorkop-based outfit in January 2022.

At Matsatsantsa, he had played just under 200 games and found the back of the net on 20 occasions.

Since joining Bafana Ba Style, Mokoena has been outstanding in the middle of the park, producing stellar performances for the side.

To prove that Mokoena has been phenomenal for the Brazilians, he won the 2022/2023 PSL Footballer of the Season and Midfielder of the Season.

FORMER MAMELODI SUNDOWN SKIPPER ON TEBOHO MOKOENA

Former Masandawana skipper Hlompho Kekana has commended Mokoena’s progression and praised his determination to the game.

And Kekana has given a glowing verdict of Mokoena’s displays.

“There’s a hard worker in every footballer that needs to be put on the table for you to excel in any club. The boy, I think without a doubt we can easily see from where we are seated that he works very hard,” said Kekana.

“You know, it’s personal for players as I always say when you want to play football longer, make sure that you take care of the little things that you can take care of.

“You look at the boy; he doesn’t have a problem with fitness. So, when you don’t have any problem with fitness everything comes secondary to him because we South Africans don’t have a problem with talent. So, it’s just a matter of him taking his game to the next level.”

The Masandawana legend, Kekana, further expressed his delight about Mokoena’s performances at the just-ended 2023 AFCON tournament held in Ivory Coast.

“I have got no doubt with his attitude over the past years and the tournament [AFCON] they just came back from. That’s for me, was a display of a game of football,” he added.

“I love how he wants to learn, and how he wants to continue where he left off before AFCON. So, I think that’s the benchmark, we don’t expect anything less than what he showed us in the AFCON. I think that takes a very good player to maintain that level of the game.”
