Johnson’s verdict on Duba’s performance against Swallows

Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Calvin Johnson has given his verdict on the performance of academy graduate Wandile Duba against Moroka Swallows in the DStv Premiership.

The Soweto sides renewed their rivalry on Saturday at FNB Stadium in a match that was disturbed by lightning due to rain. The Soweto Derby ended as a 0-0 stalemate as both couldn’t find the back of the net.

The 19-year-old was introduced in the 56th minute when Amakhosi were already disadvantaged, a man down. Defender Edmilson Dove was shown a straight red card for a foul on Gabadinho Mhango.

This was Duba’s second appearance this season after a league match against Royal AM, where he only played for one minute.

JOHNSON IMPRESSED BY WANDILE DUBA’S MOVEMENTS IN THE FINAL THIRD

Johnson was impressed by Duba’s contribution, especially the movements he made in the final third. The 65-year-old feels like the young attacker was going to perform better if the Glamour Boys were not a man down.

“If we had maybe the extra man, maybe you would have seen Wandile [Duba] in a better performance. But yes, I thought tonight he did well,” said Johnson.

“He came on and he defended from the front, but at the same time he also made some good moves. I think he made one or two that were really telling. If everybody else read the moves, maybe someone else should have scored.

“… When you look at the opportunity that [Christian] Saile got and the opportunity that Mshini [Nkosingiphile Ngcobo] got, you see what Wandile is doing, then you realise what he did.

“I think Mshini could have gone a little bit closer and then he could have turned and then caught on the second ball. The one he [Duba] moved away that Saile got, I think if Saile holds the ball, anything else can happen.”
