Cape Town Spurs issue update on Thato Mokeke

DStv Premiership side Cape Town Spurs have explained the presence of free agent Thato Mokeke in their camp.

Mokeke recently parted ways with CT Spurs neighbours Cape Town City after five years at the club.

The 33-year-old’s contract at CT City was due to come to an end in June this year. Spurs CEO Alexi Efstathiou has since confirmed to FARPost that Mokete is using the club’s facilities for rehabilitation after his injury setback.

“He is still doing his rehabilitation for the injury. So we offered him to use our facilities if he wants,” said Efstathiou.

“It is always difficult when you are injured and you are on your own. I think it’s nicer for him to be in a club environment where you come here to the gym in the mornings and have people around. It makes the rehab a lot easier. So for the moment, he is still getting himself right.”

The club however has not ruled out the possibility of signing the former SuperSport United player in the future.

“Let him do that [recover] first and see where that takes him and obviously it’s someone that we will have a look at.”

Meanwhile, Efstathiou has also praised coach Ernst Middendoprp for instilling belief in the troubled club. Spurs, who take on Orlando Pirates on Wednesday, have hit a turnaround and are starting to collect points.

“Of course, otherwise we would have never brought him in. But now that we have worked together I can see even more of what he brings to the party. Sometimes there were some negative comments about him and I didn’t see those negative comments around anymore.

“Honestly, he is very hard-working and realistic about the situation. Yes, he is tough and wants certain things done in a certain way but that should happen and that should be an expectation from certain players.
