Chiefs starlet Duba opens up about the loss of his mother and how he coped

Kaizer Chiefs starlet Wandile Duba has opened up about his struggles in recent months after the loss of his mother, and how he coped.

Duba’s mother was his biggest source of inspiration who kept him going stronger to have a successful football career, even though he wasn’t playing at sometimes.

The 19-year-old made his breakthrough to the Chiefs senior team last season, following impressive displays with the DStv Diski Challenge team under the guidance of coach Vela Khumalo.

It was very tough for the young attacker to come to terms with the loss of his mother. However, he found comfort in family and friends to keep focused on playing football.

“It has been tough for me since I lost my mother last season, because she was always very supportive,” Duba told the club’s media department.

“My family and friends have been there for me even more than ever since I lost my mom.

“In some ways my friends have become my parents in the way they treat me, giving me guidance and advice. Likewise with my family, and I really appreciate it.”

After struggling for some game time this season, the academy graduate made his return to the pitch last time out against Moroka Swallows. Duba was finally rewarded for his patience and hard work at training. His performances impressed coach Calvin Johnson.

“I was very grateful to the coach for giving me a chance against Swallows. It was exciting to be back in the Gold and Black.

“I have been working hard since the mini pre-season and the coaching staff have been very encouraging, telling me I will get my chance. I must just be patient and keep working hard,” he added.
