Gift Motupa opens up on his Sundowns stint

Newly signed Baroka FC striker Gift Motupa has reflected on his three-and-half seasons at Mamelodi Sundowns, including the lessons learned.

Motupa recently returned to Motsepe Foundation Championship side Baroka FC on a short-term deal after leaving Sundowns.

This is after struggling to secure game time at Masandawana since his move from now-defunct Bidvest Wits. At the age of 29, Motupa still has intentions of returning to the DStv Premiership.

WHAT GIFT MOTUPA MAKES OF HIS TIME AT MAMELODI SUNDOWNS

Speaking to FARPost at Baroka’s training grounds in Lebowakgomo, Limpopo, Motupa has described his stint at Sundowns as the best of his career.

“That was the greatest time [in my career]. What I can tell you is that I had the best time at Mamelodi Sundowns, and I appreciate it a lot,” he said.

“I have no regrets. I am happy with the time I spent there, and it has made me a better person. I know I will even get better when I am on this side.”

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BIGGEST LESSONS LEARNT AT MASANDAWANA

Motupa also looks back at some of the lessons learnt at the club and his relationship with the technical team.

“You need to focus on this gift of God that has given us. This talent needs a lot of focus, commitment, dedication, and consistency if you want to achieve and compete amongst the best in South Africa and the World. Those are things that I learnt a lot at Sundowns and some tactical aspects as well definitely helped me in so many areas.

“I had a very good relationship with everyone. Even when I left, I spoke to everyone, and we were on very good terms with each other. It was a peaceful and happy goodbye. I last spoke to coach Rulani [Mokwena] in December but obviously, when I left now we didn’t have a chart but we were on very good terms,” he said.

Motupa made just 20 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring three goals. He spent most of the time on the sidelines with injuries.

“As footballers, sometimes you go through that. You can’t focus on the negative because sometimes you get long-term injuries. But you have to find a way to come back and play again. So I had to fight hard each and every training session and the opportunity that I got to improve myself. So that I can come to find my best form.”
