Ex-Chiefs and Pirates star Schalkwyk makes Soweto Derby prediction
Former Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates star Gert Schalkwyk has weighed in on the highly-anticipated Soweto Derby, offering his prediction for the match’s outcome.
The 180th edition of the Soweto Derby is set to take centre stage this Saturday, 9 March. This DStv Premiership clash between fierce Soweto rivals Chiefs and Pirates will be held at the iconic FNB Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 15:30.
History suggests a packed FNB Stadium when these Soweto giants clash. In their last encounter back in November 2023, Pirates emerged victorious with a narrow 1-0 win, adding spice to this upcoming match as both teams battle for the bragging rights.
Schalkwyk’s Soweto journey began with The Glamour Boys, where he donned their colours from 2006 to 2009. He then crossed the Soweto divide, joining The Buccaneers in the 2009/10 season.

Without choosing a side, the retired midfielder sees the encounter ending in a draw, as both teams have been inconsistent this season.
“I’m going for a draw,” Schalkwyk told FARPost. “Both teams are currently not in top form and cannot really score more goals.
“So for me, I see the Soweto Derby being a tight one, therefore, I’m going for a 1-1 draw. Lately, both teams have been lacking in front [finishing]. I think they should strengthen their attacking force. Chiefs scored their first goal of the new year on Tuesday [against Golden Arrows].”
The 41-year-old went further, sharing his insights into the strengths of both the SA football giants and how each team can leverage these advantages to claim victory on Saturday.
“Pirates’ wingers are very good, they’re very quick, they [Pirates] can beat Chiefs on the sides. They have the likes of [Patrick] Maswanganyi, so maybe getting the ball wide and putting it in the box can help Pirates win,” said Schalkwyk.
“Chiefs have been strong at the back, defending very well in their recent matches, and they have not been conceding a lot of goals,” he added.
