Comitis reveals ‘only’ Gauteng club that enquired about Mayo

Cape Town City chairman John Comitis has revealed the “only” Gauteng club that enquired about the club’s striker Khanyisa Mayo.

In the past transfer windows, the 25-year-old has been heavily linked with Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns.

Before the end of the previous season, the Citizens extended Mayo’s contract by three years. His current contract will now run out in June 2028.

The move by Cape Town City indicated that the club wanted to keep the player for some time. And the interested clubs would have to fork out a fortune to bring the attacker on board.

Despite the heavy links with the Glamour Boys, Comitis says “the only” club that showed interest in Mayo is Sundowns, saying they never received any enquiry from Chiefs.

“I haven’t [received any enquiry from Kaizer Chiefs],” Comitis told FARPost. “The only interested party was, just over a year ago, was Sundowns. Otherwise, there was nothing from Chiefs.”

Mayo has become a vital cog for City, having joined the club in the 2020/21 season from the KZN side Richards Bay FC.

He had a season to remember in the previous campaign, ending it as a joint-top goal-scorer along with Sundowns’ Peter Shalulile.

As a result, he won big at the Cape Town City awards, walking away with the Player of the Season award.

He has also been impressive this season as he’s currently the second top goal-scorer with nine goals behind the Brazilians’ Lucas Ribeiro, who’s on 10 goals.

Mayo recently earned a call-up to the Bafana Bafana squad that will participate in the FIFA Series international friendlies pilot project in Algeria.

They take on Andorra on Thursday, 21 March and play Algeria five days later.
