What Amajita coach makes of Mfundo Vilakazi and Shandre Campbell

Amajita head coach Raymond Mdaka has spoken about what he thinks of Kaizer Chiefs rising star Mfundo Vilakazi and SuperSport United teenage sensation Shandre Campbell.

The duo is part of Mdaka’s 41 players selected for the SA U20 men’s national team, set to start with their programme for the year this month.

Amajita will have a weeklong training camp at the SAFA Technical Centre in the south of Johannesburg.

The camp will begin on 21- 28 March 2024. This is part of their preparations for the 2025 AFCON qualifiers in September 2024.

Vilakazi made his debut for Chiefs against Milford FC in the Nedbank Cup Last 32 tie on 25 February 2024, coming as a substitute.

‘Obrigado’, as he is popularly known within football circles, has shown signs of growing in influence as an attacking midfielder.

The 18-year-old has featured in two games for the Soweto giants across all competition this season since his promotion to the first team in January this year.

SUPERSPORT UNITED’S SHANDRE CAMPBELL

Campbell made a name for himself on his debut for Matsatsantsa on 5 August 2024 when they defeated Richards Bay 2-0 at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium.

On the day, the 18-year-old led to Gavin Hunt’s side’s opening goal after he provided an assist for former Pirates striker Terrence Dzvukamanja. Campbell also played a role in the second goal scored by loanee Etiosa Ighodaro. He went on to win the DStv Premiership Man of the Match.

The talented left-winger has played 21 matches for the Tshwane giants in all competitions, scoring three goals and contributing four assists in the process.

RAYMOND MDAKA ON MFUNDO VILAKAZI AND SHANDRE CAMPBELL

Coach Mdaka has revealed his impression of the two talented youngsters ahead of their camp.

“In actual sense, when we talk about players who are already under 20, these are the players we should have looked at when they were at the age of 17,” said Mdaka in an interview with FARPost.

“Most of the players, especially players that are good come in well especially when they enter the professional level at an early age.

“Their quality and how they are doing for now is something that needs to be looked into very closely.”

Mdaka continued: “As much as sometimes you see players from a distance in their games from their respective clubs, a closer look at them and working with them could be an advantage in developing and improving their game.

“But we expect a lot from them moving forward and how we see them from a distance, and helping us in the 2025 U20 AFCON qualifiers.”
