TS Galaxy’s Mojela hails Orlando Pirates star as role model

TS Galaxy attacker Lehlohonolo Mojela has shed light on his footballing inspirations, revealing his admiration for a player at Orlando Pirates.

The former Casric Stars forward has enjoyed a good run of form in his debut season in the PSL with the Rockets, becoming one of the key players for coach Sead Ramovic.

So far in the 2023/24 campaign, he has found the back of the net five times and has registered an assist in 22 matches in all competitions.

In addition, the 27-year-old almost helped Galaxy clinch the Carling Knockout Cup by scoring in the final against Stellenbosch FC; however, they lost in the penalties.

Mojela looks up to Pirates’ Kermit Erasmus as his role model. The Galaxy star believes their playing styles are similar, which is why he admires Erasmus’ game.

A proven winner, Erasmus boasts an impressive trophy cabinet in the SA top-flight. He’s lifted three DStv Premiership titles, three MTN8 cups, and one Nedbank Cup.

The experienced 33-year-old has featured for several clubs, including SuperSport United, Cape Town City FC, and Mamelodi Sundowns. Throughout his career, Erasmus has racked up a commendable 69 goals and 35 assists in a total of 276 appearances.

Erasmus’ consistent displays on the field of play once saw him play overseas for teams like Feyenoord, Stade Rennais, Lens, and Excelsior. The striker also represented Bafana Bafana when he was in his 20s and earned 20 caps, coupled with two goals and three assists.

“Who is my role model? It has to be Kermit Erasmus of Orlando Pirates,” Mojela told FARPost. I believe his style of play is similar, and we have a lot in common.

“He’s someone that is very mobile during a game, he drops back and looks for the ball. That’s the same about me. I’m not someone who just stands up front there and waits for the ball.

“Each time, I try to make sure that I’m active and more involved to that I’m able to help the team and contribute towards it’s success.

“I also like the fact that our bodies are more or less similar. We are both short and strong physically. We are good on the ball; it’s rare to lose the ball when it’s on the feet.”

Mojela may have an opportunity to rub shoulders against his role model when The Rockets lock horns against the Sea Robber in May in a league encounter.
