Soweto club that showed interest in Katleho Maphathe

Following his exit from Richards Bay FC, a Soweto club expressed interest in Katleho Maphathe before he signed with Cape Town Spurs.

Maphathe parted ways with Richards Bay in November 2023 after a fallout with the club management.

The wing-back was released outside of the transfer window and he had to wait for the 2024 January transfer window to open before signing for the club of his choice.

The 30-year-old defender took the Natal Rich Boys to the PSL Dispute Resolution Chamber [DRC] after failing to pay settlement fees.

Maphathe has since won the case against Richards Bay and the club has been ordered to pay the settlement in full by the PSL.

During the January transfer window, Katleho Maphathe joined the relegation-threatened Cape Town Spurs on a short-term deal that runs until the end of the season.

The Free State-born utility player has already established himself as a regular starter at Spurs after playing five games across all competitions since his arrival.

WHICH SOWETO CLUB EXPRESSED INTEREST IN KATLEHO MAPHATHE?

FARPost understands that Moroka Swallows made contact with Maphathe, but they were beaten to his signature by the Urban Warriors.

“Moroka Swallows made contact with Katleho Maphathe before he signed for Cape Town Spurs,” a source close to the player said.

“The boy is a very good player, and you can see how he quickly adapted to life at Spurs under Ernst Middendorp.

“I think Spurs just emerged as the more serious team chasing for his signature because the time Swallows called him, he was already in Cape Town. It was always going to be difficult for Swallows to snatch him from Spurs due to their financial challenges.”
