Pitso Mosimane to receive prestigious recognition

Three-time CAF Champions League-winning coach Pitso Mosimane is set to be honoured with a prestigious recognition.

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) will award Mosimane an Honorary Doctorate on July 25th, 2024. The announcement celebrates Mosimane’s remarkable career as a player, national team coach, and international club manager.

While Mosimane’s playing career may not have reached the legendary heights of some, he has emerged as one of the most successful coaches on the African continent.

Mosimane, who is currently coaching Abha FC in the Saudi Pro League has collected 19 trophies in his coaching career in South Africa, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

Following a stint as part of South Africa’s 2010 World Cup backroom staff, Mosimane transitioned to a head coach role for Bafana Bafana. Since then, he has established himself as a powerhouse.

Mosimane’s dominance extends to the CAF Champions League, where he’s secured a remarkable three titles with Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly. This impressive record culminated in a well-deserved Coach of the Year award from CAF in 2016.

The 59-year-old also won two trophies with SuperSport United and a whopping 11 as Mamelodi Sundowns coach. He clinched five more titles with Al Ahly before securing the Saudi Arabian First Division title with Al Ahli.

WHAT THE UJ SAID ABOUT PITSO MOSIMANE

“Mr. Mosimane has achieved notable success throughout his career,” reads a statement by UJ. “His numerous awards, including Coach of the Year honours from both South Africa and CAF, demonstrate his exceptional leadership and ability to inspire teams to excel.”

The University also highlighted Mosimane’s advocacy for African football. “He has been vocal about the potential and quality of African football, consistently advocating for African players to receive equal opportunities and recognition.”

Mosimane’s efforts to develop young talent through the Pitso Mosimane Soccer Schools were also commended.

UJ Registrar, Professor Bettine van Vuuren, emphasised the significance of Honorary Degrees. “This award recognises individuals who have made substantial contributions to their field and society, aligning with the University’s vision and values.”
