Kaizer Chiefs midfield crisis opens door for Samkelo Zwane
Kaizer Chiefs find themselves facing a midfield crisis with two senior players ruled out of their clash against Cape Town City.
Amakhosi make a trip to the Mother City to face the Citizens on Saturday at the Athlone Stadium [15h30]. But they are without the duo of Yusuf Maart and Edson Castillo, who have featured regularly for Amakhosi this season.
In his maiden season with Chiefs, Castillo has made 23 appearances in all competitions and scored five goals. Maart has played 25 matches in all competitions and provided three assists.
The two are suspended after picking four yellow cards. This development means they will sit out the next match, which could present a golden opportunity for the unheralded Samkelo Zwane to step into the spotlight and showcase his talent.
“Castillo and Maart shouldn’t be suspended for the boy to play. He could play ahead of them,” former Chiefs winger Junior Khanye told FARPost. “If that boy can get time, he can improve. I’m pleading with Cavin [Johnson] to give him a chance…”
CHIEFS IN CRISIS: WILL SAMKELO ZWANE BECOME THEIR MIDFIELD SAVIOUR?
Their absence creates a significant void in the Chiefs’ midfield. Zwane, who has impressed in limited appearances, might be thrust into the starting lineup. The 22-year-old has made seven appearances this season, coming in as a substitute in all matches.
This could be a defining moment for Zwane’s season. He will have to prove his worth and solidify his place in the starting lineup. Of course, Amakhosi also have Siyethemba Sithebe waiting on the wings. Nonetheless, Sibongiseni Mthethwa is most likely to partner Zwane at the base of midfield.
Khanye describes Zwane as “one of the best talents I’ve ever witnessed”. He, however, admits “he’s never been properly developed”.
“I think the development, they robbed the boy. It’s unfortunate because he got into a situation where Chiefs is struggling. He can’t do miracles alone, especially as a youngster.
“The expectations are so high. I believe Cavin Johnson, if he didn’t have the pressure he has, the boy would have played regularly. Samkelo has mastered the passing game. He knows how to play in tight spaces. Kaizer Chiefs needs a person who can pass and receive, a person who is fearless.”
If he gets the chance, Chiefs fans will eagerly watch how Zwane handles the pressure and responsibility.
