Pitso Mosimane: ‘Never thought it was within reach’

Pitso Mosimane has reacted after learning of the Honorary Doctorate bestowed upon him by the University of Johannesburg (UJ).

Mosimane will receive an Honorary Doctorate from UJ for his outstanding career. The ceremony will take place on Thursday, July 25th, 2024, at 4:30 PM, a day before his 60th birthday.

Mosimane expressed his gratitude for the prestigious honour. “I’m grateful to the University of Johannesburg for choosing to recognise and celebrate my career in such a way. I have, and always will be, a student of our beautiful game. I’ve won many trophies and awards during my career, but I never thought an accolade such as an Honorary Doctorate was within my reach as a football coach. I am thankful to the leadership at the University of Johannesburg for this recognition.”

The decorated coach also acknowledged the contributions that made his success possible. “This achievement would not be possible without the people who have contributed to my journey, including players, coaches, football administrators, media, my supporters, and the support from the general public in South Africa, the African continent, and the Gulf region.”

WHY PITSO MOSIMANE DESERVES THE HONORARY DOCTORATE

Mosimane’s illustrious career includes coaching stints with South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns and Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly, where he achieved remarkable success. He is currently the head coach of Abha Club in Saudi Arabia.

His achievements in the dugout are undeniable. He has led teams to numerous victories, including the CAF Champions League on three occasions. 

UJ praised the former SuperSport United coach’s remarkable career and contributions to African football in announcing his honorary doctorate award.

The university highlighted his impressive coaching accolades, including Coach of the Year honours from South Africa and the Confederation of African Football [CAF]. The statement further commended his leadership qualities and ability to motivate teams to achieve excellence.

The University also recognised Mosimane’s strong advocacy for African football. They acknowledged his vocal support for the continent’s potential and talent and his consistent push for equal opportunities and recognition for African players on the global stage.

Professor Bettine van Vuuren, Registrar of UJ, emphasised the significance of Honorary Degrees, stating that they honour individuals who have made substantial contributions to their field and society, which align perfectly with the University’s vision and values.
