‘People always said I’m a ball boy’: Chiefs’ starlet Mfundo Vilakazi

Kaizer Chiefs’ rising star Mfundo Vilakazi has opened up about being called a ballboy before his promotion, sharing his feelings about the experience.

Vilakazi had been knocking hard on the first team door with his good displays in the DStv Diski Challenge. In January, Vilakazi was promoted to the Amakhosi senior team.

‘Obrigado’ finally made his PSL debut in February in the Nedbank Cup Last 32 against Motsepe Foundation Championship Milford FC. He was introduced in the second half just after the hour mark.

However, the 18-year-old had a debut to forget as Amakhosi suffered a shock 5-4 defeat on penalties after 120 minutes of play. To date, the young attacking midfielder has made two appearances in all competitions.

MFUNDO VILAKAZI ON HIS PROMOTION TO KAIZER CHIEFS SENIOR TEAM

Vilakazi says he was emotional when he was promoted. He couldn’t wait to get on the field to showcase his skill to supporters who mocked him for being a ball boy in Chiefs’ home matches

“It was very emotional for me,” Vilakazi told FARPost. “People on social media always said I’m a ball boy.

“On the day I played my first match, it was the right time for me. It was an opportunity to show what I’m capable of doing on the field of play.

“Honestly, I wasn’t pressured that I’m still yet to play for the Kaizer Chiefs senior team. I had told myself that my time would come no matter what.

“Even if it was going to be this year or next year, I knew that I was going to play for the senior team. It’s pointless to get an opportunity early then I fail to deliver and go back to the DDC.”

Vilakazi is in line to make his third appearance for the Soweto giants when they are on the road to face Cape Town City FC in their next league match.

The two sides will battle for three points on Saturday, 30 March at Athlone Stadium. Kickoff is at 15H30.
