Dennis Onyango makes shocking revelation about Young Africans

Mamelodi Sundowns veteran goalkeeper Denis Onyango has made a shocking revelation about Tanzania giants Young Africans ahead of Saturday’s CAF Champions League quarter-final clash.

The much anticipated first leg encounter will be played at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium. Kickoff is set for 20H00.

During a pre-match press conference on Friday, the former Ugandan skipper revealed that he was once a Yanga player years back before his international career took flight.

WHAT DENIS ONYANGO SAID ABOUT THE YANGA MOVE

“For me, it’s an honour to be here again in Tanzania, of course not a lot of people know that I did play for Yanga,” said Onyango.

“But I signed for Yanga couple of years back before I started my international journey all the way to Sundowns. So for me, I feel like home.”

Yanga president Hersi Ally confirmed what Onyango said, stating that he was once their player.

“We did sign Onyango, but it was a very short period, he came here. At the time, he was literally unknown. He didn’t stay too long.” Yanga president Hersi Ally Said told FARPost.

After the short stint, Onyango returned to Uganda and played for SC Villa from 2004 to 2005 under former Orlando Pirates coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic. He spent most of the time on the bench because of the experienced goalies that were ahead of him in the pecking order.

Onyango then moved to Ethopian side St. George in 2006 alongside mentor ‘Micho’. That’s where he was scouted by SuperSport United coach Pitso Mosimane, when he was playing in the CECAFA Senior Challenge.

After winning three successive DStv Premiership titles with SuperSport from 2007/08 to 2009/10, Onyango joined now-defunct Mpumalanga Black Aces. He spent only one season before Sundowns acquired his services in 2011.

Upon his arrival at Sundowns he struggled for game time, due to stiff competition. At that time, there were goalkeepers like Calvin Marlin and Wayne Sandilands. He was sent out on loan at now-defunct Bidvest Wits and spent one season. After returning to Masandawana ahead of 2014/15 season, he fought for the number one spot.

With the Tshwane giants, Onyango has won seven league titles, two Telkom Knockouts [now called Carling Knockout], MTN8 title, Nedbank Cup, CAF Champions League, CAF Super Cup and the African Football League title.
