A war of words erupts between PSL coaches over bad officiating

Orbit College head coach Pogiso Makhoye is calling out Baroka FC’s coach, Dan Malesela, for what he perceives as hypocrisy.

Makhoye argues that Malesela has benefitted from questionable refereeing decisions in the past and shouldn’t solely criticise referees when calls go against his team.

Orbit lost 2-1 to Baroka at the Global Village on Wednesday and failed to close the gap on Motsepe Foundation Championship leaders Magesi FC with eight matches to go.

The rookies remain third with 37 points, five behind Magesi. Orbit has been a surprise package this season following their promotion from the SAFA ABC Motsepe League.

Under the guidance of the highly qualified Makhoye, the club is now in serious contention for promotion to the elite league.

However, Makhoye has expressed his dissatisfaction with a certain match official whom he says has officiated in three bad games against them.

It’s so painful to lose three games to the same man [Tshidiso Mkhwanazi],” Makhoye told FARPost.

“The very same referee was there when we played Baroka at Olympia Park Stadium. He gave them a dubious free-kick, and they scored from there. Today [Wednesday], it was worse, worse, worse.

“But we need to take the boys up and get ready for Magesi. All is not lost; we will fight until the end,” said Makhoye.

“It’s the first time that I have experienced this at Global Park. With the same coach who has been complaining that he is not getting fair refereeing, I expect us to get a fair game. But today, because it suits him, I hope he will also tell people that the referees helped him to win today.”

But Malesela has also hit back at Makhoye, saying their bench also showed disrespect towards them.

“They have been shouting here, and I didn’t say anything,” he also told FARPost. “They were saying all sorts of bad things that we don’t know the rules and whatsoever. I don’t care about them; I focus on my team, and life goes on.

“The problem with these young guys is that they all argue. They know. You can’t tell them anything, so let’s keep it that way.”
