Kaizer Chiefs defender Luke Fleurs dies in tragic incident 

South African football was plunged into grief on Wednesday evening after the tragic news of promising defender Luke Fleurs’ passing.

The 24-year-old, who joined Kaizer Chiefs a few months ago, tragically died after being shot during a hijacking.

Fleurs, considered a rising talent, had yet to make his official debut with Chiefs. However, his potential was highly regarded, having shown flashes of brilliance during his time with SuperSport United. After joining Matsatsantsa from Ubuntu FC in 2018, he amassed 70 appearances and scored twice.

The news of Fleurs’ passing has sent shockwaves through the South African football community. The circumstances surrounding Fleurs’ death are a stark reminder of the violence that continues to plague South Africa.

The Cape Town-born star made a switch to Amakhosi in October 2023 as a free agent. Having impressed at youth international level, he was seen as a promising prospect for the club.

“We are profoundly shocked and saddened to learn of the tragic and untimely passing of one of our players, Luke Fleurs.

“The 24-year-old former youth international lost his life after being shot during a hijacking on Wednesday evening in Johannesburg. He was rushed to hospital, where he succumbed to gunshot wounds.

“Luke came to Kaizer Chiefs earlier this season before finally signing a two-year deal with the Club in October 2023. He was yet to make an official appearance for Amakhosi, although he had sat on the bench for the team.

“The Club’s management, players and the technical team are all profoundly upset by this devastating turn of events.

“We convey our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends during this extremely difficult time. The Club will make further announcements at a later stage.”
