Kaizer Chiefs grieve Luke Fleurs: Chippa United match update
Kaizer Chiefs are reeling from the loss of young defender Luke Fleurs with a DStv Premiership fixture against Chippa United scheduled for Saturday.
Tragedy struck the South African football scene on Wednesday as the 24-year-old defender was shot dead during a carjacking in Johannesburg.
Fleurs, a talented young defender, joined Amakhosi in October but was yet to make his debut. The former youth international was a promising prospect for the Soweto giants. Fans, teammates, and sporting bodies across South Africa have poured in tributes.
The PSL confirmed on Thursday that there would be a moment of silence to honour Fleurs at all league fixtures this weekend. But there have been questions about whether Chiefs’ clash against the Chilli Boys will proceed.
The PSL had to call off a match between TS Galaxy and Mamelodi Sundowns early last month after The Rockets’ bus was involved in an accident. The Galaxy team bus was involved in a collision with a VW Polo while travelling to Nelspruit. Sadly, the Polo driver was reported deceased. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among those on the bus.
WILL KAIZER CHIEFS TRAVEL TO EAST LONDON TO FACE CHIPPA UNITED?
In the case of Amakhosi, information reaching FARPost is that the match will go ahead. Chiefs are scheduled to travel to East London on Friday. The game is pencilled in for 15h00 on Saturday at the Buffalo City Stadium.
Chiefs paid their respects to the late defender on Thursday afternoon at the Village in Naturena. The team held a moment of silence and a prayer session in memory of the former SuperSport United defender.
Following the emotional tribute, the Amakhosi squad shifted their focus to training. Amakhosi will be hoping to honour Fleurs’ memory with a positive performance in East London.
They are coming from a 1-0 loss to Stellenbosch FC, a result that came after another uninspiring goalless draw at Cape Town City FC.
Chiefs are looking to finish the season strong as they approach a decade without silverware.
