Sekhukhune United set to take bold approach in transfer market

DStv Premiership side Sekhukhune United is set to take a new bold approach in the transfer market for the upcoming season.

Sekhukhune are fresh from a tactical goalless draw against the 2024 Carling Knockout Cup champions Stellenbosch FC away from home on Saturday. Before that Babina Noko played out to an entertaining 2-2 draw against Cape Town City FC in the league at Peter Mokaba Stadium last Tuesday.

They had won five games in a row before the draws against Stellenbosch and CT City, and Sekhukhune United are unbeaten in their eight seven matches in the Premiership.

The Limpopo-based outfit, in fourth place on the log standings, has accumulated 34 points in 21 matches, and they are in a race to finish in the top three to participate in CAF inter-club competitions. Sekhukhune won 10 games in the league this season, drawing three while losing seven times.

While Sekhukhune is seemingly on the rise, this publication understands that work is underway behind the scenes to take a new approach to the transfer market.

The Simon Malatji-owned team is contemplating minimising their activities in the transfer window and promoting more players from the club’s development structures.

At the start of the 2023/24 campaign, Sekhukhune was aggressive in the market and signed over 10 players.

Sekhukhune signed Siphesihle Mkhize, Jamie Webber, Lebogang Mabotja, Keletso Sifama, Tiklas Thutlwa, Renaldo Leaner, Kgomotso Mosadi, Kgothatso Mariba, Zaphaniah Mbokoma, Collins Makgaka, Thabo Nkwana, and Ryan Baartman.

The club’s head of development, Alex Bapela, outlined plans to promote and integrate young players into the senior team.

“Look when I took over at Sekhukhune United, my role has always been to link the development team with the first team,” Bapela told FARPost.

“Before I arrived in the club, very few players gained promotion to the first team, so we want to change that and give more young players a chance.

“I work closely with the coaches in the first team and when I see a player that deserves a chance, I make a recommendation. I check positions that are thin on depth, then recommend a player who’s ready to play at that level.”
