Mokwena on why 2023/24 season is ‘most difficult’ campaign he’s ever had

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has explained why he feels the 2023/24 season is the “most difficult” campaign he’s ever had as a coach.

Mokwena was speaking after his side defeated Cape Town Spurs 1-0 on Tuesday evening at the Athlone Stadium.

Masandawana are yet to taste a league defeat this campaign having won 16 and drawn four of the 20 DStv Premiership matches they have played thus far.

The Tshwane giants are on course to become to first PSL club to finish the entire league season without a loss.

Mokwena insisted he’s not even thinking about the record as he takes “one game at a time”.

He also believes this is his most difficult campaign as he has had limited time to train his side and make corrections due to a hectic schedule the team is facing.

RULANI MOKWENA SAYS THEY HAVE LIMITED TIME TO TRAIN DUE TO HEAVY SCHEDULE

“I don’t even think about it [finishing the season unbeaten] to be honest, seriously because I just go one game at a time,” said Mokwena.

“I don’t know how much it’s playing on the players’ [minds] and I don’t know what they’re discussing in the changing room.

“And sometimes do you know what we’ve done is so good that we’ve become victims of our own success. We’ve elevated the standard so high that even if we have performances that are generally decent enough to be proud of, we’re never satisfied.

“I suppose it’s mainly because of our own success and the levels that we have pushed to attain.

“This season is probably the most difficult I have experienced as an assistant coach or as a head coach because I have no training time, I have no time on the pitch with these players.

“I see so many things, I write so many notes, we have so much time to evaluate the footage, but it’s not enough to correct some of the things.”
