Former Chiefs player defends current squad against badge disrespect claims
With Kaizer Chiefs facing their ninth season without silverware, a former player has emerged to defend the current team against accusations of disrespecting the club’s legacy and badge.
Amakhosi are now mathematically out of the DStv Premiership title race with seven games remaining. The team is currently placed eighth on the log standings with 30 points from 23 games.
Even if they win all their remaining games, they can only reach 51 points, which won’t be enough as Mamelodi Sundowns are at the top of the log standings with 52 points. The Soweto giants have also been eliminated in the Nedbank Cup, MTN8, and Carling Knockout Cup.
Chiefs last won a major trophy in 2015 when they lifted the PSL title under the guidance of Stuart Baxter. Since then, the team has been lacking the fortune of good luck to restore its glory days. Some of the club’s legends have criticised the current Chiefs players for not fighting enough for the badge.
The former Chiefs players who have criticised the current Amakhosi troops include Tlou Molekwane, Junior Khanye, Jabu Mahlangu, and Mike Rapatsa.
EX-KAIZER CHIEFS PLAYER Throws Support Behind Current Players
Mokete Tsotetsi, who played as a defender for Chiefs between 2007 and 2009, has defended the current crop of Amakhosi players, citing that the boys are fighting hard but simply don’t have good luck.
“To be honest with you, the boys are fighting now, and if it’s not your time, it’s not your time yet,” said Tsotetsi in an interview with FARPost.
“People might say they are not Chiefs material and they are not fighting much for the badge, but yet they are there running and working hard, though it’s just that it’s not their time yet, and their time will come.
“The same players can turn the corner and become the stars of Kaizer Chiefs, winning trophies for them. I think they just need the mother of good luck to turn things around.”
‘I KNOW THIS IS A GREAT TEAM’
Tsotetsi continued by saying that he knows this is a great team and that the players are working hard.
He stated that he has been there before and knows how the club works.
“They are working, and I know this is a great team because I have been there before. I know how they work management-wise, the technical team, and the focus,” added Tsotesi.
“I even know the players who are there because they are not only playing for Kaizer Chiefs but for the nation because Amakhosi is like a country. So, you cannot relax when you play for Chiefs.
“I believe the boys are doing well. As a player, you can play smart, but at the end of the day, luck has to be on your side, and if it’s not on your side, they may seem like they are not doing well. It’s not that they are bad players. We have a good squad, to be honest.”
