Steve Komphela likens Golden Arrows striker to Didier Drogba

Golden Arrows head coach Steve Komphela has waxed lyrical about a Golden Arrows striker, likening him to former Chelsea FC star Didier Drogba.

Komphela was speaking after his side played out to a 1-1 draw in the KZN Derby against Royal AM in the DStv Premiership at the Mpumalanga Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The stalemate extended Abafana Bes’thende’s winless run to three games. Meanwhile, AM couldn’t register what could have been their second consecutive win if they won the match.

Despite dropping points at home, Komphela spoke highly of his players singling out the striker Lungelo Nguse.

Komphela feels the 25-year-old possesses the same qualities as of Drogba who’s the fourth all-time top goal-scorer of Chelsea.

“The way we play, we wish to create more situations where we can find ourselves running forward to the opponents’ goalposts,” said Komphela.

“There’s been many instances where Arrows, from a build-up and all of a sudden is at counter-attack.

“So, we generate a lot of these artificial counterattacks. And Nguse by coming short, creating the space and indecision to the defenders because a center-back must decide…do I follow him?

“And if you follow him, you’re creating the space that can be exploited. Then we turn, we go forward. Okay, Nguse drops, you don’t follow him, he’s free, he gets the ball.

“So, we need to generate that. He understands that concept. He’s an integral part of how we wish to play. He’s deceptive…a Didier Drogba, he’s big, if he turns, he pushes the ball and he goes.

“And it is rare to find a situation where a big player is that fast. He’s powerful and he’s a clinical finisher.”

Nguse joined Abafana Bes’thende at the beginning of the season from AmaTuks. He has scored six goals from 19 appearances across all competitions.

Before he donned the University of Pretoria shirt, he also turned out for Bizana Pondo, Baroka FC and TS Sporting.
