Ria Ledwaba sets record straight on SAFA freezing her accounts

Former SA Football Association vice president Ria Ledwaba has responded to the association’s decision to instruct the sheriff to freeze her bank accounts.

This emanates from the legal costs of the court cases between Ledwaba and SAFA last year.

The court made a cost order in favour of SAFA of over R 400,000. While the former Ria Stars boss maintains she has already paid the bill, the football motherbody has instructed the sheriff to attach her accounts.

RIA LEDWABA LAMBAST SAFA FOR FREEZING HER BANK ACCOUNTS

“It is imperative for me to place on record that immediately upon the information that SAFA has instructed the sheriff to attach my accounts, I immediately made payment of the amount,” said Ledwaba in a statement sent to FARPost.

“[I] Instructed my attorneys to demand a written undertaking from SAFA that it shall immediately, upon receipt of the payment, instruct the sheriff to remove the attachment without delay.

The ex-PSL club owner added: “I have expressed my displeasure with the manner the attachment was secured without any notice served by the sheriff or SAFA, or demand served by the sheriff on my attorneys of record or on me personally.

“This procedure is rarely adopted in practice and is only implemented as a last resort in matters where a debtor deliberately engages in tactics to avoid payment of its debt. In this respect, the debtor would have avoided service of all notices and demands for payment, which is not the case in this matter.”

Ledwaba also added that the attachment of her accounts is merely to embarrass her in public.

“SAFA has failed to follow the proper procedures relating to the attachment of my accounts which includes services of all notices and writ of execution on me and my legal representatives,” she said.

“In this respect, I place it on record that had the proper procedures been followed, payment would have been made to SAFA because I always had the necessary funds to pay for this litigation.

“The attachment of my accounts should be seen for what it is, which is to embarrass me and to create an impression in public that I am a delinquent involved in reckless litigation without funds to pay legal costs.”

“I have notified SAFA through my attorneys that should the attachment result in prejudice to my relationship with my bankers; I reserve my rights to seek appropriate recourse in court.”
