EXPLAINED: Why Gift Motupa ditched Baroka FC

FARPost has established that striker Gift Motupa has left Motsepe Foundation Championship side Baroka FC a few weeks after joining them, and chairman Khurishi Mphahlele has explained why.

Motupa joined Baroka in late February after parting ways with Mamelodi Sundowns

He initially spent a few days training with SuperSport United but the club decided against signing him. The 29-year-old only played 20 minutes for the club when he came on as a second-half substitute during a league match against Venda FC.

Baroka chairman Khurishi Mphahlele has confirmed to FARPost that Motupa has left the club. Mphahlele, who regards the former Orlando Pirates striker as his son, says the club will have a conversation with him next season to establish his plans.

“Yes, Gift [Motupa] has left. He is no longer with us,” said Mphahlele.

“What happened is that he couldn’t manage to come to training some days, but some he would. So he ended up not coming.

“There has not been any engagement since then, but he is my son, and we are hoping to sit down with him at the end of the season to find out his plans.”

BAROKA FC TO FIGHT UNTIL THE END

Baroka will take on Upington City at Mxolisi Dicky Jacobs Stadium on Tuesday. They are still within a chance of securing a playoff spot and are mathematically also within a chance of securing an outright promotion.

“We have come far now, there are no nerves. We have done well this season, and I am proud of the boys,” added Mphahlele when asked about chasing promotion.

“The coach [Dan Malesela] took us from the bottom and to fight for promotion. We will find on as a club.”
