Kannemeyer’s DStv Premiership Defender of the Season picks
Former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns defender David Kannemeyer has revealed his picks for the DStv Premiership Defender of the Season award.
As the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season races towards its May finale, anticipation builds for the PSL awards, including the Defender of the Season. This prestigious award recognises the league’s most outstanding defensive talent, who has consistently impressed throughout the campaign.
Last season, Sundowns right-back Khuliso Mudau won the award. He helped the Tshwane giants to win their six successive league title.
Kannemeyer, a retired defender, believes the Defender of the Season award should be won by one of Sundowns’ defenders: Khuliso Mudau, Grant Kekana, Mothobi Mvala, or Aubrey Modiba.

The four players have been in brilliant form in the league each time they have played. So far, Mudau has played nine matches, and Modiba has made 13 appearances. On the other hand, Mvala has played 10 games, and Kekana has played 15 times.
In 22 league outings, Masandawana are yet to taste defeat, and they have been solid at the back, letting in only eight goals.
“I think it [the winner] should be one of the Mamelodi Sundowns defenders that played a big part for the national team [Bafana Bafana] at AFCON [Khuliso Mudau, Grant Kekana, Mothobi Mvala and Aubrey Modiba]” Kannemeyer told FARPost.
“One of them should get the accolade. I’m sure all people have seen how those defenders have been performing helping the club to win matches.
“The team haven’t lost a game in the league this season. Also, they have conceded fewer goals compared to other teams. I think it’s a bonus for them that they played in the national team in the 2023 AFCON, and they did extremely well.”
