Judas Moseamedi reflects on short-lived Tunisian stint

Maritzburg United striker Judas Moseamedi has reflected on his short-lived Tunisian stint with El Gawafel Sportives de Gasfa.

Moseamedi had penned a two-year deal [until 2025] with the new Tunisian Ligue Professionnelle 1 side in July 2023. However, a turnaround of things saw the striker leave the club before making his debut in September 2023.

The 30-year-old then re-united with Motsepe Foundation Championship side Maritzburg United in December 2023 as a free agent following months of training with the club.

The former Marumo Gallants star previously played for the KZN side for three seasons [2018/19 up to 2020/21]. During that time he made 74 appearances in all competitions, scored 15 goals and provided three assists.

Since his return to Maritzburg, Moseamedi has made made five appearances in all competitions and he’s yet to score or provide an assist.

Moseamedi says it was a great opportunity to move to Tunisia to experience a new challenge as it’s one of the top leagues in the continent. But things didn’t go his way. He cited two challenges why he made an early return home and these are language barrier and his diet.

“I wouldn’t comment much on the Tunisia move because I left before the league started for personal reasons,” Moseamedi told FARPost. “I think it would’ve been a great step for me and also the opportunities that comes when you’re playing in that league.

“For the few weeks that I stayed there, I think the challenge was the language and the food there was something else. The only language they talk is French and Arabic so it was never easy.

“Imagine before going out to eat you had to google a picture of rice and chicken so that you can show them what you wanted to eat.

“It was just a lot for me and other factors that made me come back home. I’m happy I took the opportunity, but things didn’t unfold as I expected hence, the early return.”
