Shongwe makes his pick: Who should Chiefs sign between Magoola & Nwabali?

With both Salim Magoola and Stanley Nwabali linked with Kaizer Chiefs, former Amakhosi goalkeeper William Shongwe has offered his analysis on who would be the better fit for the club.

The Soweto giants are looking to strengthen their goalkeeping options. With Itumeleng Khune nearing the end of his career, Bruce Bvuma and Brandon Petersen are the only experienced keepers on the roster. Youngster Bontle Molefi provides depth but lacks PSL experience.

In recent months, rumours have swirled around Chippa United’s shot-stopper, Stanley Nwabali, with reports suggesting a potential move away from the club.

Meanwhile, FARPost reported last week that Chiefs have also set their sights on Richards Bay FC’s Salim Magoola, creating a two-pronged approach to bolster their goalkeeping department.

Shongwe stated that it would be difficult for the Chiefs to choose between Nwabali and Magoola, as they are both good goalkeepers. However, Shongwe believes that Nwabali is the best.

Nwabali also impressed at 2023 AFCON as he guided Nigeria to the final and won a silver medal. In seven matches he conceded four goals and registered four assists.

Statistics reveal that Nwabali has had better performances this season. He has made 24 appearances in all competitions for the Chilli Boys. He has conceded 25 goals and kept 11 cleansheets.

On the other hand, Magoola has also played 24 matches across all competitions for the Natal Rich Boys. He has let in 26 goals and kept six clean sheets.

“They are both good goalkeepers [Magoola and Nwabali],” Shongwe told FARPost. “We saw Nwabali in the 2023 AFCON of course.

“I wouldn’t want to say this one over the other, but Nwabali had the chance to play in the Nations Cup and he proved beyond the reasonable doubt, he’s top class. Magoola he’s also good, but at this time, I think Nwabali will be the best bet.”
