Chiefs legend Khune to be honoured for 25 years of service
Itumeleng Khune, a name synonymous with goalkeeping excellence and unwavering loyalty to Kaizer Chiefs, is set to receive a special tribute in recognition of his 25 years of service to the club.
The legendary goalkeeper will be honoured at FNB Stadium on Saturday, 18 May 2024, during the Chiefs’ final home game of the 2023/24 PSL season against Polokwane City FC.
The occasion promises to be a melting pot of emotions – a celebration of Khune’s illustrious career and a poignant farewell as he prepares for the next chapter.
Back in June 2023, Chiefs announced that this campaign would be Itumeleng Khune’s swansong as a player. As confirmed by Amakhosi, the former Bafana Bafana No.1 will trade his gloves for a coaching cap and an ambassadorial role within the club’s marketing department next season. However, Khune expressed a desire to continue playing beyond the current season.
While it remains unclear whether Khune will receive the starting nod for his final home game in Chiefs colours, the PLK City tie is crucial as three points are on the line for Chiefs. The Soweto giants are pushing to secure a top-eight finish.
FNB Stadium Set for Emotional Send-Off as Kaizer Chiefs HonoUr Itumeleng Khune
On Thursday, Chiefs said that the Rise and Shine clash will be an emotional send-off and a chance for the club, teammates, and supporters to express their gratitude to Khune, one of the most decorated players in Amakhosi’s history.
“Khune, a stalwart of South African football, has been a pillar of strength for Kaizer Chiefs for over two decades, having arrived as a youngster from Ventersdorp, in the North West, back in 1999,” said the club.
“Known for his exceptional goalkeeping skills and leadership on and off the field, Khune started in the Kaizer Chiefs Youth Development Academy before being promoted to the senior team at the start of the 2004/05 season. Khune spent five years in the youth structures and is currently in his record-setting 20th season with the senior team.”
In addition, Chiefs issued a rallying cry to their supporters, urging them to pack FNB Stadium (15:00) in Soweto to celebrate Khune’s career and show their appreciation for the goalie’s immense contributions to the club.
“Supporters in Gauteng, and those from further afield who are able to travel, are encouraged to come in large numbers to show appreciation for Khune’s contributions to the Amakhosi cause,” declared Chiefs.
“The game against Polokwane City will not only be a crucial match for Kaizer Chiefs, with three vital points at stake, but also a poignant moment for fans to celebrate the career of a true legend of the game in South Africa.
“Kaizer Chiefs supporters and football fans are invited to join us at FNB Stadium on Saturday to witness the team’s final home game of 2023/24 and to honour Khune’s remarkable legacy with the Club.”
