‘I played an important role’: Thapelo Liau on Themba Zwane’s rise

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Thapelo Liau has detailed the role he played in Mamelodi Sundowns talisman Themba Zwane’s journey to the top.

He believes the rise of ‘Mshishi’ is an incredible story that must serve as an inspiration. Zwane and Liau share a long history when the Sundowns star was just a youngster eager to break into the professional ranks.

Liau at the time was scouting players and recruiting them to both National First Division and topflight teams.

The 46-year-old has revealed how he had to sit down with the Bafana star when he was worried about his “lack of luck”.

THE TOUGH JOURNEY OF MAMELODI SUNDOWNS STAR THEMBA ZWANE

“I remember before Themba Zwane got a professional contract in Tembisa. I used to scout players from different tournaments and create squads of different players,” Liau narrated to FARPost

“So one time came a guy by the name Tebogo ‘Bizza’ Mathebula. He told me that he had a boy [Themba Zwane] in Tembisa whom he felt was not lucky but was good.

“Themba came to our training session and the first time I saw him I was amazed. I was shocked by his talent,” he said.

What Thapelo Liau told Themba Zwane before his big break

“We went to play friendly matches with the likes of Bloemfontein Celtic and AmaZulu and that’s when Themba Zwane gained so much confidence.

“I played an important role in his career and he knows, before Sinky [Mnisi] took him to Sundowns. So I have enjoyed watching him play for so many years. He is my favourite.”

WHAT THAPELO LIAU TOLD THE BAFANA BAFANA MIDFIELDER BEFORE SECURING BIG MOVE

“I told him that there is no luck in football, you work your luck. To remain committed and train hard. You know when young players watch TV they think it’s easy until they turn professional. I am very proud because I speak with him most of the time.”
