Arrows’ Lungelo Nguse makes admission about ex-Chiefs striker

Golden Arrows striker Lungelo Nguse has made an admission about an ex-Kaizer Chiefs striker who played at the KZN side a few seasons ago.

Nguse joined Arrows as one of the new signings ahead of the 2023/24 DStv Premiership campaign, as the team was bolstering its squad. The goal-poacher signed with Abafana Bes’thende as a free agent after he parted ways with Motsepe Foundation Championship side AmaTuks.

With Abafana Bes’thende, the 25-year-old has had an average first season. In 22 league matches, he has found the back of the net six times. Firstly, he worked with co-coaches Vusimuzi Vilakazi and Mabhuti Khenyeza, then Khenyeza alone, and now he’s under the leadership of experienced mentor Steve Komphela.

Komphela has previously made some remarks about Nguse. First, he likened the striker to Ivory Coast and Chelsea FC legend Didier Drogba. Then, recently, he backed Nguse for a future Bafana Bafana call-up.

Nguse says Mbesuma is the striker he grew up idolising. Interestingly, Nguse’s nickname on the field of play is also ‘Mbesuma’.

The ex-Kaizer Chiefs striker made his name in the South African top-flight in the 2004/05 season. Mbesuma was scoring goals for fun as he won the Golden Boot by scoring 25 goals in that season and helped Chiefs to win the league title.

“My role model? It has to be [Collins] Mbesuma,” Nguse told FARPost. “Even now, they still call me Mbesuma when I’m playing football.

“My previous chairman Unathi Mqokiyana [of Bizana Pondo Chiefs] gave me that name after seeing what I can do on the pitch. When I was growing up, he was the striker I was looking up to. He was scoring many goals for Chiefs. I liked his movements and his positioning on the ball.”

“We once had a chat when he was still at Pretoria Callies, and I was at AmaTuks. He encouraged me to keep on working hard, then I will reach my full potential.”
