Cape Town Spurs make decision on Ernst Middendorp

Cape Town Spurs have made a decision on head coach Ernst Middendorp following the relegation of the club from the DStv Premiership.

The Urban Warriors finished at the basement of the SA elite league with 23 points after 30 games.

Middendorp was appointed as the club’s head coach in November 2023 after the Cape club parted ways with Shaun Bartlett.

CT Spurs suffered defeats in all their opening seven DStv Premiership matches under Bartlett’s tutelage, leading to his demise. As a result, the Urban Warriors were the first team in the history of the PSL to lose their opening seven games of a season.

On Monday, 3 June 2024, Spurs confirmed that they have decided to cut ties with the German mentor with immediate effect.

CAPE TOWN SPURS CEO ON ERNST MIDDENDORP’S DEPARTURE

The club’s CEO, Alexi Efstathiou, expressed gratitude to the outgoing coach for his services.

“On behalf of the board and the club, we would like to convey our sincere gratitude to Ernst. Especially for his commitment and dedication over the recent months,” said Efstathiou.

“The spirited fight that he was able to master in the second phase with our team was nothing short of amazing. Unfortunately, due to the restrictive financial environment of the NFD, the club was unable to extend the relationship.”

Efstathiou continued: “There is nothing sinister in the decision as the coach clearly indicated that he was willing to stay on and assist the team in getting promoted back to the PSL.”

The club further stated that it will make an announcement on a way forward in due course.

Spurs will face tough competition to keep some of their key players few following their relegation. Players such as Ashley Cupido, Chumani Butsaka, Luke Baartman, and Asenele Velebayi, just mention a few.
