Cape Town Spurs part ways with key player

Cape Town Spurs have parted ways with one of their key players following their relegation from the DStv Premiership.

The Urban Warriors have been relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship after only one season in the SA’s top-flight.

CT Spurs gained promotion to the Premiership through the PSL promotion/relegation playoffs during the 2022/23 season.

In the just-ended season, CT Spurs had a dismal showing, finishing in the basement of the log standings. They won only six games in the league, drew five, and lost 19 times in 30 matches, collecting 23 points.

This is the second time the Cape Town-based side has been relegated to the second division after suffering the same debacle in 2018.

CT Spurs began the last season with Shaun Bartlett as the head coach. He was fired midway through the season after failing to guide the team to positive results. Bartlett was replaced by Ernst Middendorp, but the tactician could not save the club from relegation.

With CT Spurs facing an uphill battle to keep their best players, talented defender Katlego Maphathe has parted ways with the club.

The wing-back signed for CT Spurs during the January transfer window on a short-term deal after a surprise exit from Richards Bay FC.

Maphathe quickly established himself as a key player, featuring in 13 appearances in all competitions and scoring one goal.

Despite Cape Town Spurs’ efforts to keep the 31-year-old defender, the two parties could not agree on an amicable solution. Maphathe is free to join any club of his choice.

Meanwhile, CT Spurs have already announced the departure of Middendorp who has been at the club for just over six months.
