Ex-Sundowns marksman keeps defying odds in China

A former Mamelodi Sundowns marksman is ageing like fine wine as he keeps defying the odds of age in the Chinese football ranks.

Even at the age of 36, Zimbabwean Nyasha Mushekwi still possesses the same free-scoring abilities that once saw him carve a niche in the PSL.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns marksman is currently in blistering form for his new team, Yunnan Yukun FC.

Mushekwi, who turns 37 in August, left Zhejiang Greentown early this year as a free agent after his contract was not renewed. He left the club as their all-time top goal scorer after scoring 75 goals in 130 appearances.

Following his departure from Zhejiang Greentown, Mushekwi joined Chinese League One side Yunnan Yukun FC. The club was promoted to the second-tier Chinese league after winning the League Two title.

And as it stands he is scoring for fun for the team that is pretty poised at the top of the log table. They have 33 points after 14 matches.

Crucially, Mushekwi has scored 10 goals in the 13 league matches he has played. On Saturday evening, the gangly forward notched a brace as Yunnan Yukun FC beat Dalian Zhixing 3-0 in a league match.

This was his second consecutive brace after he scored another one when they beat Shijiazhuang Gongfu FC 4-1 last weekend.

In total, Mushekwi has contributed 12 goals for the team since joining them in February. This includes two other goals he scored in the AFC Champions League.

As such, he is the leading goal-scorer in the league. How he will end the current campaign remains to be seen. In addition, this year, Mushekwi marks nine years in the Chinese football ranks.

He arrived in China in January 2016 after leaving Sundowns, signing for DL Yifang where he spent three years.

Afterwards, he switched to Zhejiang Greentown, where he spent five years before joining his current club, Yunnan Yukun FC.
