Ex-Sundowns midfielder makes return to SA top-flight with CT City
Cape Town City FC announced the signing of a familiar face – a former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder returning to the SA elite league after a bittersweet adventure abroad.
This signing marks CT Town City’s second foray into the midfield market for the upcoming season. Two weeks ago, they unveiled Namibian international Prins Tjiueza.
With preparation for the 2024/25 campaign set to resume, The Citizens are clearly on the offensive, aggressively shoring up their central area in pursuit of glory.
On Monday, the club confirmed the arrival of former Sundowns and Moroccan giants Raja Casablanca midfielder Haashim Domingo.
Domingo put pen to paper on a two-year deal plus a one-year option with the CT City as a free agent following his departure from Raja AC, where he struggled to break into the side under former Orlando Pirates coaches Josef Zinnbauer and Fadlu Davids.
CT CITY Bolster Midfield with Signing of Haashim Domingo
CT City took to their social media platforms, posting a video alongside the caption: “MAESTRO IN THE CITY. Welcome, Haashim Domingo! He’s officially a Citizen!
“The club is delighted to announce the signing of South African attacking midfielder Haashim Domingo on a three-year deal.”
Domingo makes a homecoming of sorts, returning to Cape Town after nearly a decade. He left his youth club, Ajax Cape Town [now known as Cape Town Spurs], in 2014 to pursue a path that took him to Portugal’s Vitória de Guimarães. His journey continued in Norway with Raufoss before he returned home, first playing for Bidvest Wits, then Mamelodi Sundowns, and most recently Raja AC.
The 28-year-old parted ways with Sundowns after the 2022/23 season. He then signed a two-year deal with Raja Casablanca with an option of a third season. However, his stint in Morocco was short-lived.
Domingo made only 10 league appearances in the recently concluded season before terminating his contract with Raja AC due to unpaid wages and signing fees. According to reports, he has since filed a complaint with FIFA regarding an unresolved payment dispute with the Moroccan club.
Meanwhile, Domingo’s new club, CT City, has already released five players, including Thabiso Kutumela, Jo Paciencia, Relebogile Mokhuoane, Bongani Mpandle, and Khanya Leshabela.
“We would like to thank all the players and wish them every success in their future endeavours.”
