Two new Motsepe Foundation Championship clubs confirmed
Two new Motsepe Foundation Championship clubs were confirmed following the 2023/24 ABC Motsepe League National Playoffs semi-finals on Friday afternoon.
The semi-finals took place at Mxolisi Dicky Jacobs Stadium in Upington, Northern Cape.
Kruger United of Mpumalanga and Highbury from the Eastern Cape have gained promotion to the Motsepe Foundation Championship for the 2024/25 campaign. This comes after their triumphs in the SAFA‘s ABC Motsepe League national playoffs semis.
WHO DID KRUGER UNITED AND HIGHBURY BEAT
Mpumalanga’s Kruger United defeated North West’s Thames 1-0 in the first semi-final of the day. Kruger management would be proud of themselves to have achieved this milestone for a team that is only 10-months-old.
Ex-AmaZulu FC striker Roggert Nyundu has spoken for the first time after helping Kruger United gain promotion to the Motsepe Foundation Championship. “First thing first, I just want to thank the management and the fans for the support since day one,” he said.
“Secondly, just like I told you the last time, I still want to see myself doing well with the team I’m with right now getting promotion to the DStv Premiership. That’s my wish going forward.”
Meanwhile, in the second game of the day, Highbury beat Njampela FC of KwaZulu-Natal 2-1 in a humdinger of a showdown.
This is a fantastic story for Highbury, who had to wait until the last minute to make the playoffs following weeks of legal battles in the Eastern Cape ABC Motsepe League between Sinenkani FC, SAFA EC, and Ravens.
The two finalists will battle it out in the final on Sunday, 23 June, at Mxolisi Dicky Jacobs Stadium. The kick-off is at 15:00.
WHAT’S THE PRIZE MONEY
The winner of the national playoffs will receive R1 200 000 in prize money and the title for 2024.
