Mugeyi twins, William and Wilfred set to take exciting path in Zim
After spending over 30 years in South African football circles, former PSL stars Wilfred and William Mugeyi are set to take an exciting path in Zimbabwe.
The Mugeyi twins have been based in SA since 1993, when they were signed by former Premiership side Bush Bucks.
They left the now-defunct Zimbabwe’s PSL outfit Black Aces after Wilfred had won the Player of the Year award in 1992. Both retired in the early 2000s and have gone on to establish themselves well in junior football development.
Wilfred and William Mugeyi established a football academy in East London. They have produced players who mainly play in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
Named the Mugeyi Sports Academy, the project’s aim is to give back to the community that hailed them during their time in the PSL.
WHAT THE FORMER PSL STARS ARE PLANNING TO DO
Now, the former PSL stars are set to open a similar project in their home town of Zimbabwe, with the similar aim of uplifting junior football in the country.
William told FARPost that they aim to play a pivotal role in reviving Zimbabwe’s dormant junior football. According to William, the academy will be located in Mabvuku, a high-density suburb where they were born and bred.
“We have been discussing it with my brother [Wilfred] that we need to establish ourselves at home [Zimbabwe],” said William. “We came from Mabvuku. And we will do the same thing we did to the community that kept us safe when we came here to South Africa.
“What is pushing us is the current situation in Zimbabwe. There is no vibrant football at junior levels, and the results are even seen in how our national team performs.
“Therefore, we are going to establish something that will breed good players for our country. Right now, it has gone below standard. So we have been planning, and very soon, everything will be in place for this project to kick off.”
Both William and Wilfred were snatched by Bush Bucks in the same year, 1993. Then a forceful striker, Wilfred played for several clubs including a season-loan spell at Israeli giants Maccabi Haifa in 1995.
Wilfred was also part of the history-making Zimbabwean squad that featured at AFCON in Tunisia in 2004.
He also played for Vanguard Huandao, Ajax Cape Town [now Cape Town Spurs] and FS Stars. On the other hand, William had a modest career as a defender at Bush Bucks until retirement.
