Former coach sizes up Relebohile Mofokeng’s potential for a move abroad

Mxolisi Silango, who nurtured Relebohile Mofokeng’s talent at the School of Excellence Academy, has shared his thoughts on whether the youngstar is ready for a move abroad.

Mofokeng has become a hot commodity in South African football, consistently impressing with his performances for Pirates whenever he’s given the chance

In his full season with Pirates in the DStv Premiership, the 19-year-old impressed. He made 38 appearances for the Sea Robbers, netted five goals and bagged six assists.

For his performances, he earned his first Bafana Bafana call-up and made his debut against Zimbabwe in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

In addition, the talented attacker walked away with two awards at the 2023/24 season PSL Awards on Sunday. These are the DStv Premiership Young Player of The Season and the Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player.

Last season, Mofokeng attracted interest from English Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers. He went for trials; however, a deal was not reached.

MXOLISI SILANGO SAYS MOFOKENG IS READY FOR A MOVE ABROAD

Silango has backed Mofokeng for a move overseas whenever an opportunity comes. He says Mofokeng ticks many boxes: He’s young, talented, intelligent, and can quickly adapt, and he’s playing his best football now.

“If a person is ready, like Rele [Relebohile Mofokeng], you should give the boy a chance,” Silango told FARPost. “You can see he’s almost there; you can see he’s coming, alright.

“I don’t think it’s okay when we say he needs another season in the PSL. If the opportunity comes, he should just leave the country and make a mark somewhere else.

“It will be a good export for the country; the boy is still young. He’s a talented player, he’s a special player, and he’s at the stage where he wants to prove a point. I believe he’s ready.”

“If he gets an opportunity overseas, I hope he joins a team where he will have game time and will grow to the next level as a player.”
