Dondol Stars emerge as favourites for Marumo Gallants status
Gauteng ABC Motsepe League side Dondol Stars are leading the race to acquire Marumo Gallants’ Motsepe Foundation Championship status, FARPost can reveal. Gallants recently purchased the DStv Premiership status of Moroka Swallows which will see them return to top-flight football.
The club was relegated at the end of the 2022/23 season. They failed to gain promotion last season prompting the club owner to purchase Moroka Swallows in a reported R45 million deal.
The club confirmed on Thursday that the PSL had granted them permission for their immediate return to the elite league. They will now be based in Mangaung in the Free State on a full-time basis.
This has led to questions on who will be taking over their First Division Status.
DONDOL STARS FINALLY SECURE A MOTSEPE FOUNDATION CHAMPIONSHIP STATUS?
After failing to secure promotion via the ABC Motsepe League national playoffs in Upington last week, this publication has gathered that Dondol is on the verge of finalising a deal that would see them purchase the available Marumo Gallants status. There have also been unverified talks of other potential interested parties for the status.
Dondol, who were crowned Gauteng Champions, were one of the favourites for promotion at the national playoffs. But the club failed to win any match playing two draws and subsequently being eliminated from the playoffs. Kruger United and Highbury FC sailed through.
WHAT THE SALE OF THE MARUMO GALLANTS STATUS WOULD MEAN FOR SOME PLAYERS
The move will see some of the Marumo Gallants players remaining in the First Division with Dondol. Some players are set to move to Mangaung with Gallants. The same could also apply to allow Dondol players who will now be promoted to the PSL team.
FARPost has attempted to solicit a comment from Dondol Stars Chairman Ludwick Makharu without success.
