Agent reveals Sundowns decision on Themba Zwane’s future

The representative of Mamelodi Sundowns captain Themba Zwane has revealed the club’s decision on the future of the midfielder.

Zwane was one of the few players at Sundowns that saw their contract expire at the end of the previous season. Nevertheless, the club had two options on his contract.

Zwane’s agent Jazzman Mahlakgane has confirmed that the club took up an option to prolong the 34-year-old’s stay at the club by triggering the first option.

This means his current deal with the Tshwane giants will run until the end of the season before they decide on the second option they have on his contract.

SUNDOWNS EXERCISED OPTION ON THEMBA ZWANE’S CONTRACT

“Well, I’m actually surprised that Sundowns haven’t made a formal announcement because they’ve taken an option,” said Mahlakgane during the Richards Bay FC sponsorship launch.

“So, Themba has the two options and they have taken one option for the season we are going into.

“So, he’s still secured at Sundowns.”

Further, Mahlakgane stressed the importance of focusing on Zwane’s performance and contributions on the field rather than his age.

He believes the Bafana Bafana star can still offer his services for over two years before he calls it a day in football.

MAHLAKGANE ON ZWANE’S QUALITY DESPITE OVER BEING OVER 30

“You know the quality of Themba, you shouldn’t confuse it with his age or anything because it might get mixed up with that. Look at the quality of Themba not how old he is.

“The level at which Themba plays, for me, without being bias because he’s my player, he could give this country and his clubs another two to three years, it’s that simple.

“And I think this is a conversation that’s no longer a secret that I communicated with Sundowns, to say someone like him at this level, looking after himself so well, he’s not a night sleeper.

“For me, he should be rewarded as long as he can play. I was encouraged when I watched the Euro that between [Critiano] Ronaldo and Pepe, one is 39 and one is 41.

“These guys can play like a 25-year-old, so, I think the two players at that level, they’ve given us an opportunity to start looking at the players’ qualities not how old they are and Themba is one player who must lead that conversation.”
