Billiat emerges as firm favourite in Zim’s PSL Golden Boot race

Khama Billiat is proving that he is not yet a spent-force in Zimbabwe and is now a firm favourite in the coveted PSL Golden Boot race.

He scored his seventh goal for Yadah FC in the 2023/2024 season when they drew 1-1 with Hwange at The Heart Stadium on Saturday.

The 33-year-old is now one goal behind the leading goal-scorer, William Manondo of Caps United. At this rate, it is not hard to imagine him winning the coveted PSL Golden Boot race.

Plausibly, he has been at the centre of Yadah FC’s resurgence as they have been a relegation candidate since their promotion to the Zim elite league in 2016.

Owned by prominent Prophet, Walter Magaya, the Harare-based club has always survived relegation on the last day in Zimbabwe’s PSL.

Last time out, they ended the season on 14th position, two points above the relegation zone. This time around, they appear to be having better fortunes with Khama Billiat inspiring the team. Evans Rusike formerly with SuperSport United has also been a key figure.

Khama Billiat continues to prove he is not yet a spent-force in Zimbabwe's PSL and is now one of the firm favourite in the coveted PSL Golden Boot race.

On Saturday the former Kaizer Chiefs attacker scored after 30 minutes of play. They however failed to defend their slender lead as Pritchard Mphelele equalised for Hwange after 86 minutes.

It remains to be seen how Billiat will fare until the end of the season for Yadah FC. He is remembered for what he achieved in the DStv Premiership.

He won multiple trophies with Mamelodi Sundowns. These include three league titles. He also helped them win a CAF Champions League and a CAF Super Cup title.

At individual level, he won top awards that include the PSL Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season. He was voted as the Midfielder of the Season in 2016.

Billiat finished as runner-up to Denis Onyango for the CAF African Player of the Year based in Africa award for 2016, arguably his best achievement.

The former Sundowns man became the highest paid player in Zimbabwe, earning R 90 000. Meanwhile he pocketed R 280 000 in signing on fees.
