‘We can reasonably aim to dethrone Sundowns’: AmaZulu FC president

AmaZulu FC president Sandile Zungu has explained why he believes his side should be within the conversation of teams that have what it takes to challenge Mamelodi Sundowns’ dominance.

Zungu was speaking at the club’s press conference held at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Monday afternoon.

He recalled some of their notable accomplishments over the last four seasons, such as coming in second with 54 points in the league in the 2020/21 season and consequently earning a spot in the CAF Champions League.

He also spoke about reaching the MTN8 final in 2022 where they fell short to Orlando Pirates.

Zungu is optimistic about their ability to achieve even greater success and potentially dethrone the Brazilians, who have been the dominant force in domestic football, especially the league, for the past decade.

SANDILE ZUNGU ON WHY HE FEELS AMAZULU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO DETHRONE SUNDOWNS

“I don’t believe that it’s impossible to achieve a top four finish and I don’t believe it’s impossible to achieve a top two finish,” said Zungu.

“In the past four seasons, we’ve been probably the best number two. We got 54 points in the 2020/21 season.

“I think Pirates got 54 points two seasons ago, they didn’t get 54 points last season, they were number two. I believe that we’ve achieved some of the great things.

“Even Mamelodi Sundowns is a great team but we can reasonably aim to dethrone them just like all other ambitious teams must aim to dethrone them.

“They’ve done exceptionally well and we’re very proud of their accomplishments. But we need to dethrone them, someone has got to move them from the pinnacle that they’ve occupied for so long.

“And we believe AmaZulu must raise its hand to say we want to be counted.

“The question is, do we have requisite material to achieve that? We believe we’ve got a requisite material within the resources limitations that we have and that many teams have in this country.

“We believe we have the requisite material to compete and we will compete.”
