New PSL side make decision on head coach

New PSL side Highbury FC have made a decision on their head coach, Kabelo Sibiya, as the 2024/25 Motsepe Foundation Championship season looms large.

This publication can confirm that the Eastern Cape-based outfit has granted the well-travelled mentor, Sibiya, a new three-year deal after guiding the club to the SA second tier.

Highbury boss Cameron Klopper kept the promise he made in October last year when Sibiya took charge of the club in the SAFA Eastern Cape ABC Motsepe League. The chairman kept his word by giving the North West-born gaffer a new deal to take the club to greater heights.

The Highbury hierarchy has trusted Sibiya, believing he can take them to the DStv Premiership within the three years granted to him.

After weeks of legal battles in the Eastern Cape third division and not knowing if they would be able to participate in the national playoffs, Highbury kept their heads up and conquered against all odds.

Under the tutelage of Sibiya, Highbury managed to beat Sinenkani FC 2-0 in the provincial playoffs and were crowned the Eastern Cape overall champions.

As a result, Sibiya’s side qualified for the national playoffs, where they had to play their first game a day after their provincial decider, having travelled eight hours to Upington in the Northern Cape, where the national playoffs were held.

Interestingly, the side went on to secure promotion to the PSL and won the national playoffs.

Highbury defeated Mpumalanga’s Kruger United 2-0 in the national playoffs final at Mxolisi Dicky Jacobs Stadium last month.

For a team that almost got relegated four seasons in a row in the lower division before Sibiya was roped in, they are well aware of the challenges that come with competing in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

They are ready to make a big statement as the management insists that they are not the SA second tier to add numbers.
