Siyabonga Ngezana mum on his future in Romania

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Siyabonga Ngezana has remained mum on his future with the Romanian giants FCSB amid transfer rumours emerging from Azerbaijan.

The towering centre-back is in his first season with FCSB, having signed from Chiefs ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

Ngezana’s first season in Romania started slowly, failing to meet expectations. However, he displayed remarkable resilience, adapting to the league and ultimately becoming a key defensive figure for FCSB.

His strong performances at the back were instrumental in propelling the team to their first Romanian Super League title in nine years. FCSB secured the championship with a dominant performance, amassing 64 points from 30 matches.

As one of the top six teams from the Super Liga regular campaign, FCSB progressed to the Championship playoffs. They finished at the summit of the playoffs to advance to the UEFA Champions League qualifiers.

As it stands, Ngezana’s FCSB are currently in the second round of the UEFA Champions League qualifiers. They will face Maccabi Tel Aviv FC in the first-leg on Tuesday, July 23rd, 2024, at the National Arena and the second-leg away from home on 31 July.

WHAT DID NGEZANA SAY ABOUT HIS REPORTED MOVE TO AZERBAIJAN?

Meanwhile, Ngezana who penned a five-year contract with FCSB has recently expressed his dream to play in the Champions League.

In an interview with FARPost a few months ago, Ngezana recognised the difficulty in reaching the Champions League qualifiers. While his team currently won the playoffs, they must maintain their performance to qualify for the Champions League, a feat not easily achieved.

“We will see how things unfold because even myself, I’m not certain about my future because anything can happen at any time. But if I’ll still be with the team, it will be nice to play in the Champions League.”

With just one year in the books of FCSB, the Bafana Bafana international has reportedly attracted interest from Neftchi Baku in Azerbaijan. Before that, he was linked with a move to French Ligue 1 side Lorient and an unknown team from Turkey .

This publication reached out to Ngezana to set the record straight about the reports in Azerbaijan linking him with a move away from FCSB.

“At the moment, I can’t be able to speak [about the transfer] because I don’t know what’s happening. So I would say it’s just rumours.” Ngezana said.
