AmaZulu FC beef up attacking options with Sundowns striker

AmaZulu FC have beefed up their attacking options with the signing of Mamelodi Sundowns striker Etiosa Ighodaro on a season-long loan deal.

Usuthu are preparing for the upcoming 2024/25 Betway Premiership season, aiming to improve on their 11th-place finish in the league table last season.

The KZN-based side parted ways with a handful of first-team players a few weeks ago to make space for new signings. They have already cut ties with George Maluleka, Augustine Kwem, Veluyeke Zulu, and Victor Letsoalo, who has since signed for TS Galaxy.

Kwem was a surprise exit from AmaZulu after finishing the previous season as the club’s top goal scorer with eight goals across all competitions in 28 games.

The Nigerian forward featured in 35 matches in all competitions for SuperSport. He scored eight goals and provided two assists.

This is Ighodaro’s fourth successive loan spell since joining Downs 2021 from Abuja College in July 2021. The goal-poacher has gone out on loan to teams such as the University of Pretoria, Chippa United, SuperSport United.

“AmaZulu have reached an agreement to sign Ighodaro on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns for the upcoming season. I think Ighodaro is yet to make it onto the plans of Sundowns; hence, he’s been going out on loan,” a source said.

“So AmaZulu are looking for someone to come and fill the gaps left by Victor Letsoalo and Augustine Kwem, and I think Ighodaro is a great profile. If he can be injury free for the most part of next season, I’m sure we are going to see the best of him.”

Meanwhile, the Sandile Zungu-owned team also welcomed Luvuyo Phewa on loan from the Brazilians. Phewa was on loan at Cape Town Spurs last season when they were relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
