Chippa United pushing to secure Sundowns midfielder on loan

Chippa United are pushing to secure the signature of Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Sammy Seabi on a season-long loan ahead of the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season.

The Chilli Boys have been one the busiest teams in the transfer window as they look to improve on their disappointing 12th-place finish last season. Chippa made a big statement with the signing of ex-Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates star Andile Jali.

The holding midfielder was signed alongside Giovanni Philander, Thobani Jacobs, Sifiso Mazibuko, Aphelele Teto, Boy Madingwane, Seun Ndlovu, Xolani Sithole, and Blessing Jali.

Meanwhile, Chippa have parted ways with 16 first-team players to make space for new signings. They released Luvuyo Memela, Roscoe Petersen, Loydt Kazapua, Azola Ntsabo, Siyabonga Nhlapo, Siphelele Luthuli, Darren Johnson, Menzi Ndwandwe, Andile Fakude, Kamohelo Mahlatsi, Diego Apollis, Khanyisile Mayo, Siseko Manona, Yurig Conwood, and Andile Mbenyane.

Interestingly, the Chippa Mpengesi-owned team has made a U-turn on left-back Azola Ntsabo and goalkeeper Darren Johnson, who have been recalled back to the club.

With Chippa United seemingly not done with recruiting new players, they have set sights on Seabi, who is not on the plans of Downs’ technical team.

Despite signing a one-year contract renewal with the Brazilians, his agent Mike Makaab recently told FARPost that they looking for a loan move for the central-midfielder.

In the previous season, the 29-year-old featured in only four matches in all competitions after facing tough competition from Teboho Mokoena, Bathusi Aubaas, Marcelo Allende, and Rivaldo Coetzee.

“Chippa United have shown interest in bringing in Sammy Seabi on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns for the new season,” a source said.

“Seabi is seen as a good midfielder who can complement Andile Jali very well because he’s a good reader of the game, and his passing game is impressive.

“The good thing is that Mamelodi Sundowns are willing to let him go out on loan, so if both clubs agree on all the terms, I don’t see the deal not happening.”

In addition, Seabi was not part of the Sundowns squad when they hosted a media open for the MTN8 quarter-final clash against Polokwane City FC at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday.
